UPDATE MIDDAY DEC. 2, 2020– The 16th annual Tyler Wilcox Memorial Guns and Hoses blood drive starts today (Dec. 2) in Fort Pierre and moves to Pierre tomorrow and Friday.
Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment and use the Fast Track Health History Questionnaire option on the Vitalant website to fill out their information, print the ticket and bring it with them when they arrive to donate. There are currently ONLY AVAILABLE APPOINTMENT TIMES ON FRIDAY. TODAY AND TOMORROW’S TIME SLOTS ARE FULL.
Tyler’s mom, Jeri, says he used many, many units of blood during his cancer battle and he wanted to do something to pay the generosity forward.
She says the blood drive is a friendly competition between local law enforcement and firefighters to see which team can get the most people to donate for them.
Wilcox says this year’s goal is to collect 420 units of blood.
The national recognition was given March 10 during the America’s Blood Centers Awards of Excellence Banquet in Arlington, VA.
Vitalant senior donor recruitment representative Abbie Arneson and firefighter Joe Meligan– who’s also been instrumental in organizing and promoting the blood drive– surprised Geri and Bob with the award last week (Nov. 25, 2020) on the KGFX People in Your Neighborhood program.
