The Walmart store in Pierre (1730 North Garfield) was evacuated for a short time this afternoon (Dec. 14) because of a reported gas leak.
Fire chief Ian Paul says they were called to the store about 1pm. Upon arrival, evacuation of the building was in progress as requested from responding fire officers. He says firefighters were able to quickly determine the odor was not originating from the furnaces in automotive repair area. The odor likely originated from a battery charging station in the same area.
Paul says Walmart staff and customers were allowed back into the business within 15 minutes of the evacuation. He says as a precaution, it’s common to start the evacuation of a building as soon as possible when there is a report of a gas leak.
Firefighters were on scene for approximately 45 minutes. Assisting the Fire Department was Montana Dakota Utilities.
