PIERRE – Overall success hasn’t been all that common in the history of Pierre Governor Volleyball. However, the 2021 season can be termed a success already. Still, the Governors want more.
For the first time in five years, Pierre has a state tournament volleyball team after its first win in the AA SoDak 16 Thursday at the Riggs High Gym over Yankton, 25-14, 25-16, 25-15.
Ayvrie Kaiser and Reese Terwilliger led the Governors with eight kills each. Remington Price had seven with three aces. Kaiser served two aces. Lily Sanchez had an ace block and 17 assists. Pierre (16-5) had only eight hitting errors.
Chloe McDermott led all attackers with 11 kills for Yankton (14-14), but the Gazelles struggled with 28 errors. McDermott also had five aces.
Pierre’s opponent in the first round of the AA state tournament at the Monument in Rapid City on Thursday will be Brandon Valley, who stopped Rapid City Stevens in three sets. In the regular season at home, the Governors lost to the Lynx in four sets. Coverage on Thursday will begin at 2:15 on The Official Voice Of The Pierre Governors, River 92.7, and at the River 92.7 page at the DRG News app & drgnews.com.
