HURON – Scott Spanton resigned as Huron High School Football Head Coach this week, leaving after three seasons, two 11AA semifinal appearances and a record of 13-18.
Huron was 6-5 in 2019, losing in the semifinal round to Brookings. In 2020, the Tigers went 5-6, again falling to Brookings in the semifinals. Huron struggled in 2021 with a 2-7 record and missed the postseason.
Spanton, a Milbank native, played football and ran track at Jamestown College (now University of Jamestown). After coaching in Rugby, North Dakota, he was a graduate assistant at Northern State on the same staff with current South Dakota State head coach John Stigelmeier. Then, Spanton spent over 30 years as an assistant coach in high schools in Texas before coming to Huron.
