PIERRE – Now that college athletes can profit from use of their name, image and likeness, could that happen for South Dakota high school athletes?
There will be discussion by the South Dakota High School Activities Association on a change to a bylaw that currently prevents athletes from profiting in this way. It was based on the former NCAA rule.
SDHSAA Executive Director Dan Swartos told the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader that this will be on the agenda as the legislative cycle begins, but also that the discussion is in the very early stages. He does not believe that state legislators will not pass their own legislation about NIL and will allow the SDHSAA to control this issue. Swartos feels that having athletes profit from NIL will not compromise the integrity of high school athletics if it is done correctly.
