MINNEAPOLIS – Outfielder Byron Buxton was named Thursday as the Twins’ nominee for the 2022 Roberto Clemente Award.
As noted in a press release, the Roberto Clemente Award annually recognizes a Major Leaguer who “best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.”
Buxton fervently supports military families. His older brother, Felton, serves in the Navy. Buxton has also participated in helping those in the Twins RBI program, served in volunteer events and attended holiday parties at a Twin Cities facility that treats sick children.
Buxton is nominated for the first time. Four past Twins have won the Roberto Clemente Award: Rod Carew in 1977, Dave Winfield in 1994, Kirby Puckett in 1996 and Nelson Cruz in 2021.
