VERMILLION – In an attempt to invigorate a struggling offense, South Dakota Head Coach Bob Nielson will call offensive plays Saturday when the Coyotes host Cal Poly in the home opener at the DakotaDome.
Ted Schlafke, USD’s quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, had called offensive plays in the first two games, which have seen the Coyotes score once, a fourth quarter touchdown last Saturday in a 24-7 loss at Montana.
Schlafke, who was quarterback at Minnesota-Duluth on the 2008 Division II national championship team coached by Nielson, has called plays for Nielson since 2013, when Nielson was the head coach at Western Illinois. Nielson became USD’s head coach in 2015.
