South Dakota and the United States gained 122 new residents today (Nov. 4, 2022) during a US citizenship ceremony in Fort Pierre.
US Magistrate Judge Mark Moreno administered the Oath of Allegiance and was the first to congratulate the new residents.
Fort Pierre Mayor Gloria Hanson was one of the speakers.
Pierre resident Shane DeLange is from South Africa. He says getting his US citizenship was a long, expensive process but completely worth it.
DeLange works for an area rancher doing farm work and helping with livestock. He says he’s looking forward to the first time he gets to vote.
The citizenship candidates are originally from Australia, Bhutan, Brazil, Burma, Burundi, Canada, China, Côte d’Ivoire, Cambodia, Cameroon, Colombia, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Kinshasa), Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Guatemala, India, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Lebanon, Liberia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Serbia, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Vietnam and Zambia. They live in Aberdeen, Armour, Big Stone City, Brandon, Brookings, De Smet, Huron, Mitchell, North Sioux City, Pierre, Sioux Falls, Tabor, Tea, Vermillion and Yankton.
