The Pierre City Commission approved a plan to build a new playground in Steamboat Park.
Bryan Tipton, City Parks and Recreation Director, says it will be located just west of the entrance to the park at Poplar and Missouri Avenues.
Tipton says people using the playground will have easy access to restrooms.
Commissioner Jamie Huizenga is excited to see the improvements.
Commissioner Todd Johnson says this is a great addition for that part of Pierre.
In separate but related action, the City Commission also approved adding a sidewalk to connect the existing parking lot to the new playground, as well as to the picnic shelter.
The estimated cost of the project, including playground equipment and concrete work, is $130,000. Weather permitting, Pierre Parks Department staff will install the new playground this spring (2024).
WRITTEN VERSION:
The Pierre City Commission has approved (Dec. 19, 2023) a plan to build a new playground in Steamboat Park.
It will be located just west of the entrance to Steamboat at Poplar and Missouri Avenues and feature a climbing tower, multiple slides spring toys, and 100 ft. zipline.
According to Pierre Mayor Steve Harding this playground replaces the one the City removed during construction of the water treatment facility.
“Our intent from the beginning was to replace and upgrade the Steamboat Park playground when water treatment construction was done,” said Harding.
In addition to new and expanded equipment, the playground is being relocated to a more premier location in the park.
“The new location is more proximate to existing parking, a bathroom, and a large picnic shelter,” said Bryan Tipton, City Parks and Recreation Director. “It’s right at the entrance to the park; it just makes sense to put it there.”
In separate but related action, the City Commission also approved sidewalk work for the playground area.
“The new sidewalk will connect the existing parking lot to the new playground, as well as to the picnic shelter,” added Tipton.
The estimated cost of the project, including playground equipment and concrete work, is $130,000. Weather permitting, the Parks Department will install the new playground this spring.
