A semi driven by a 37 year old man from Willmar, Minnesota, is the latest victim of Pierre’s low-clearance train bridge near the Pierre Street and Sioux Avenue intersection.
Information from the Pierre Police Department says the incident happened shortly before 8am today (March 2, 2024, 7:50am). Ahmed Ibrahim was traveling northbound on Pierre Street in a 2016 Freightliner semi. The attached trailer exceeded the 11-foot, 3-inch height limit for the bridge and ultimately struck the bridge causing damage to the roof of the trailer. There was no apparent damage to the train bridge.
Ibrahim was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device.
Officers had to shut down northbound traffic on Pierre Street for about 2.5 hours while crews worked to remove the truck and trailer.
Getting hit is nothing new for the bridge underpass along a major route of travel in Pierre. The route takes traffic north or south through the middle of town and is no trouble for regular size vehicles. However, the low clearance (11 feet, 3 inches) causes trouble for semis, large RVs and other tall vehicles that don’t take the truck route instead of the “regular” route through town.
