Local law enforcement officers took 15 kids, ranging in age from 6 years to 14 years old, holiday shopping Thursday evening (Dec. 18, 2025) as part of the annual Christmas, Kids, and Cops program.
Pierre Police Capt. Kyle Cummings says they contact the schools in Pierre to get a list of names of children to participate in the event. He says each child was given a gift card and partnered with an officer to walk through the store and purchase presents.
Cummings says officers from the Pierre Police Department, Hughes County Sheriff’s Office, and South Dakota Highway Patrol participated. River Cities Public Transit assisted with transportation and Walmart hosted the event, arranged a gift wrapping station and had other surprises for the kids.
Funding for the Christmas, Kids, and Cops program comes by way of donations from various groups, such as the state Fraternal Order of Police lodge.
