Two students in the Pierre School District achieved something very rare last year when they took their state standardized tests– they received a perfect score.
During this week’s (Jan. 12, 2026) school board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Kelly Glodt read from a letter he received from the South Dakota Department of Education.
To show just how rare of an accomplishment perfect scores are….

Evan Hummel.
Evan Hummel was an eighth grader when he aced the test, but admits he had doubts about some of his responses.

Josh Hegge.
Josh Hegge was a fifth grader last year when he took the test.
Josh’s mom, Stacy Hegge, expressed her gratitude to all involved with educating students in the Pierre School District.
Glodt said the state assessment tests are difficult and are meant to challenge students, so to achieve a perfect score is quite an accomplishment.
