A 54 year old man from Mount Juliet, Tennessee, was charged with Neglect and Abandonment of an Animal and taken to the Hughes County Jail early Saturday morning (Jan. 31, 2026).
Information from the Pierre Police Department says at approximately 6:06am Saturday, Officers were dispatched to the parking lot of the Northridge Plaza to check on the welfare of two dogs locked in a vehicle. The officers noted the air temperature at the time of call was -2.
The dogs’ owner, Derek Englund, refused to return and care for the dogs or to surrender them. Englund was placed under arrest and the dogs were taken to the local dog pound where they remained as of 2pm Monday.
