WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court says man can sue a major logistics company after he lost part of his leg in a semi tractor-trailer crash. The justices’ unanimous decision Thursday (May 14, 2026) could have big ripple effects across the trucking industry. The decision doesn’t mean Shawn Montgomery will necessarily win his lawsuit against the country’s largest freight broker. But the ruling opens the door to increased liability for freight brokers, which are a key part of the industry. His appeals was backed by more than two dozen states. They said the case would help bolster safety. The Trump administration and companies like Amazon urged the court to limit liability under a “patchwork” of state laws.
