July 10, 2026:
Monday (July 13, 2026) is the deadline to get registered to vote or to change party affiliation to be eligible to vote in South Dakota’s Republican primary gubernatorial runoff election later this month (July 28).
The Voter Registration form is available on the South Dakota Secretary of State’s website and from county auditor’s offices. Use this form to:

Register to vote.

Change your voter registration name or address.

Change your party affiliation.
To register or change party:

Print the Voter Registration Form,
-
fill-out the form,
-
sign it, and
-
then submit the form with your original signature to your county auditor.
South Dakota law does not allow you to submit your voter registration form via fax or email.
Additionally, absentee voting for the July 28 Republican primary gubernatorial runoff is underway at county auditor’s offices. Voters who did not request an absentee ballot for the primary election but would like to vote absentee in the runoff, must submit an application to their county auditor by July 27 at 5pm local time. When completing the absentee ballot request form, voters should select “Primary Election.”
June 16, 2026:
Absentee voting for next month’s Republican gubernatorial runoff election in South Dakota has started.
Hughes County Finance Officer Thomas Oliva says ballots were available and voting stations were ready when his office opened at 8am CT this past Friday (June 12, 2026).
In Stanley County, Auditor Phil Burtch says they received the absentee ballots at 10am and were able to begin absentee voting by 11am.
The Secretary of State’s Office says voters who requested an absentee ballot for the June 2 election, will automatically get an absentee ballot for the runoff from their county auditor.
Voters who did not request an absentee ballot for the primary election but would like to vote absentee in the runoff, must submit an application to their county auditor by July 27 at 5pm local time. When completing the absentee ballot request form, voters should select “Primary Election.”
