A Wind Advisory is in effect until 8pm CT tonight (Oct. 12, 2022) and the National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for much of western and east central South Dakota this afternoon.
State Fire Weather Meteorologist Dr. Darren Clabo says the wind coupled with the dry conditions creates an extreme fire danger.
Clabo says a majority of South Dakota has been at some level of drought all year.
He says the extreme fire danger includes not only grasslands, but also fields of crops.
The National Weather Service says very strong northwest winds spread over central and north central South Dakota today may have gusts of 50 to 60 mph. A similar situation is expected also expected tomorrow.
