PIERRE – Collegiate-level summer baseball will continue in Pierre in 2023.
The new team, which recently was introduced as the Oahe Zap, was announced Monday as a new addition to Independence League Baseball, which will conduct its second season next year.
Under terms of a lease approved by the City of Pierre in September, the Zap will share Hyde Stadium with Post 8 American Legion Baseball.
Zap Baseball, LLC, the ownership group of the team, consists of owners from Pierre and who have ties to Pierre. In an ILB press release, Zap co-owner Jackson Bruce said, “We are excited to get this new chapter of summer collegiate baseball started in central South Dakota. We have committed owners who care about the community and fans. We have an electric brand that spotlights the Oahe Dam powerhouse. Most importantly, we are an organization dedicated to our community and making this the best entertainment option in the region.”
The Zap are searching for a general manager and are seeking host families for players and coaches. Candidates for either can email oahezap@gmail.com.
Other teams in ILB include the Badlands Big Sticks (based in Dickinson, North Dakota), Canyon County Spuds (Caldwell, Idaho), Fremont Moo (Fremont, Nebraska), Gem City Bison (Laramie, WY), Hastings Sodbusters (Hastings, NE), Spearfish Sasquatch (Spearfish, SD), and Nebraska Prospects, a travel team.
Regular season play will begin in late May, with the league champion to be decided in early August with playoffs.
