SIOUX FALLS – Harrisburg provided the biggest story Thursday with a win over defending champion O’Gorman in the first round of the SDHSAA Girls Class AA Basketball Tournament at the Sanford Pentagon.
Higher seeds Sioux Falls Washington, Sioux Falls Jefferson and Pierre all won before the Tigers used good three-point shooting, rebounding and free throw shooting to defeat the Knights.
Sioux Falls Washington 48, Watertown 24
Washington, the top seed, scored the game’s first nine points and kept control.
Brooklyn Harpe led the Warriors (19-3) with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Grace Peterson scored nine points and Hannah Harpe added seven.
Maddy Rhode had eight points for Watertown (12-10) in the Arrows’ first girls state tournament appearance since 2009. The Arrows were held to 20 percent shooting.
Sioux Falls Jefferson 50, Mitchell 34
Cierra Watkins was dominant for Jefferson (18-4) with 20 points and nine rebounds. Kassidy Larsen scored nine.
Mitchell (9-13), who made the state tournament with an upset of Brandon Valley in the SoDak 16, was led by the 13 points of Addie Siemsen. Lauren Van Overschelde scored 10, with Sawyer Stoebner scoring nine with 12 rebounds. The Kernels, however, shot only 30 percent from the floor and managed just four field goals in the first half.
Pierre 42, Rapid City Stevens 34
Harrisburg 53, O’Gorman 41
The Tigers (17-5) had seven three-pointers and made 14-of-20 free throws to defeat O’Gorman, the defending AA champion.
Sadie Mehrman had 21 points and hit three three-pointers for Harrisburg. Hannah Eide scored 13 with 10 rebounds.
Mahli Abdouch scored 12 and Lucy Moore 11 for O’Gorman (17-5), who was held to 32% shooting.
