John Clark Meginness was born May 5, 1954 to John and Alice (Dempsey) Meginness in Isabel, SD in his grandmother Meginness’s house.
He attended all 12 grades at the Isabel School and graduated from Isabel High School in 1972. John was good at sports and was proud to be a Wildcat. He married Debra Bickel in July 1992.
Visiting with folks and exchanging stories were favorite pastimes of John’s. He always enjoyed time with family and friends and his grandkids brightened his days.
John was a born farmer and was great at mechanics. He loved watching the crops grow and was especially fond of combining. Classic cars were a passion as well and he collected quite a few.
Over his lifetime John served on different boards and was a county commissioner for Dewey County, a role he served with pride and took very seriously.
John’s health began to decline significantly over the last few months of his life and he spent several weeks in the hospital. Mayo Clinic staff worked hard to find a diagnosis and shortly before his death it was determined he had ALS.
He is survived by his wife, Debra; daughter Sabra (Eric) Sonsalla of Lemmon, SD; son Sean (Mara) Meginness of Minneapolis, MN; brothers Mike (HoSun) Meginness of Tacoma, WA; Dan (Vicky) Meginness of Aberdeen, SD; sisters Ellen (Larry) Fisher of Maple Valley, WA; Margaret (Jim) Karcher of Bellingham, WA; Mary (Russ) Daley of Pierre, SD; Cathy Boehler of Rapid City, SD; Laurie (Shane) Theilmann of Hot Springs, SD; brothers-in-law Jack Bickel and Keith Bickel of Firesteel, SD; son-in-law Grant Austin of Gillette, WY; grandchildren Jacob, Tenley, and Stella Sonsalla and Gabe Austin; many nieces and nephews and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Joy Meginness Austin.
