VERMILLION – Dell Rapids steadily wore down West Central in winning the 2022 11A championship. This time, the Quarriers attacked from the start, taking a 34-0 halftime lead and scoring on their first six possessions in defeating West Central Friday 42-7 in the SDHSAA 11A State Football Championship at the DakotaDome.
Jack Henry earned Joe Robbie Most Valuable Player honors by throwing five touchdown passes for Dell Rapids (12-0).
Cole Ruesink had a 43-yard carry on Dell Rapids’ opening drive, leading to a three-yard touchdown run by Mason Stubbe.
West Central (10-2) punted, then Dell Rapids improved their lead to 14-0 when Henry threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Stubbe with 1:17 left in the first quarter.
After Will Ronshaugen recovered a West Central fumble, Henry threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Tad Tjaden with 1:09 left in the first quarter, after which Dell Rapids had a 20-0 lead.
West Central punted again before Henry completed a 69-yard scoring drive with a seven-yard pass to Ruesink.
The Trojans didn’t convert on fourth down with 1:54 left in the half and the Quarriers scored again in eight plays, concluding with a seven-yard pass from Henry to Tjaden with seven seconds left.
A Ronshaugen interception ended West Central’s first drive of the second half, and Dell Rapids scored again with a Henry touchdown pass of 35 yards to Sutton Williams.
West Central’s touchdown was on a three-yard run by Chet Carda in the fourth quarter.
Henry passed for 144 yards for Dell Rapids. Stubbe ran for 118.
Dell Rapids won the school’s seventh football championship. West Central was trying for its 13th.
