James “Jesse” Quaschnick passed away Saturday, May 17, 2025, at his home in Mobridge, South Dakota with his beloved wife by his side.
Jesse was born on March 23, 1955, to Walter and Jane (Brandner) Quaschnick and was raised on the family farm near Herreid, SD. He was the sixth of ten children, joining five older brothers, followed later by four sisters. Jesse held deep affection for the family farm, which is now in the hands of the fourth generation — a legacy that meant a great deal to him.
He met his future wife, Marie Goehring, during high school in Herreid, and after graduating from Herreid High School, Jesse began working for the Milwaukee Railroad. Jesse and Marie were married on August 13, 1977, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Herreid, and they began their life together in Glenham, SD.
They were blessed with three children Amy (Kelly) Pederson of Colman, SD, Angie (James) Klein of Sinking Spring, PA, Adam (Jackie) Quaschnick of Mobridge, SD.
Jesse found immense joy in his role as “Grandpa,” cherishing the time spent with his eight grandchildren Zachary (15), Jocelyn (13), and Miley (7) Pederson; Grady (14) and Alexia (12) Klein;Raelyn (10), Jackson (8), and Canyon (5) Quaschnick.
In 1981, Jesse and his family moved to Mobridge, where he would spend the next 44 years in the same home. In 1989, he left the railroad and became self-employed as a contract hauler for the Aberdeen American News, a role he held until his retirement in 2016.
Retirement allowed Jesse to return to his roots — helping on the family farm alongside his nephew during harvest season. He relished these moments and enjoyed many lively conversations about farming operations. He also lovingly tended his own backyard project, “Grandpa’s Garden.”
Though he considered himself a man of few words, Jesse made friends easily and nurtured those relationships with care and loyalty. He had a deep appreciation for all God’s creation and paid close attention to the details of the sky and land. Weather-watching — and weather-“predicting” — became one of his favorite pastimes.
Jesse preferred hands-on learning and found joy in repurposing items others might discard. Whether it was repairing a shoe with duct tape or creating something entirely new, he had a gift for making the most of what he had.
An avid outdoorsman, Jesse could often be found with a fishing rod in hand on the Missouri River or out hunting on the prairie. He also enjoyed playing cards with friends and was a devoted fan at his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.
Jesse’s life was defined by quiet strength, deep family ties, and a love for the land and people around him. His presence will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved him.
He loved his wife very much and was grateful for her nursing background to help him in his final days. Jesse is preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Deloris Quaschnick; brother, Bernie (Sharon Stern – living); father and mother-in-law; Maynard and Marcene Goehring; nephew, Eric Quaschnick.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, his children and grandchildren; 4 brothers: Dennis (Bonnie Mittleider), Eugene (Lavida Quenzer – deceased), Ron (Zita Krumm), Rick (Louise Goehring); 4 sisters: Shelley (Dan) Martin, Kelly (Gary) Peightal, Wendy (Dennis Feist), Bobbi (Grady) Heitman; 8 brothers-in-law, Doug (Nola Perman), Deen (Lorie Fisher), Dave Cathy Ketterling), Steve (Kathy Young), Dan (Marnie Thorstenson), Mike (Kim Ruether), Greg (Guiliana) and Paul (Candida Sjomeling); 7 sisters-in-law, Louise (married to brother Rick), Faye (Jim Dupper), Rose (Bob Greenfield), Janet (Jerome Stugelmeyer), Peg (Brian Rose), Carol (Joe Albi – deceased), and Nancy (Jason Knudson); numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
