SIOUX FALLS – University of Sioux Falls football is losing a former NCAA Division II rushing champion.
Gabe Watson announced Thursday that he is transferring to the University of Texas. Watson, who played in just one game last season due to a severe hamstring injury, was granted a medical hardship last December, granting him an extra year of eligibility. However, the NSIC, and USF, won’t play football until at least the spring. Watson has hopes of being selected in the NFL Draft next year, so he wanted a chance to play this fall. As of now, the Longhorns and the Big 12 Conference are planning to play fall football.
Watson, a native of Piedmont, California, set Cougar program records in 2018 with 1,957 yards and 26 touchdowns while winning the Division II rushing title and becoming NSIC Player of the Year. He rushed for over 100 yards in every game, including 320 against Minnesota State-Moorhead to set a school record.
