In Loving Memory of Doris LeCompte Soiseth
March 9, 1928 – June 19, 2026
With heavy hearts and profound respect, we announce the passing of Doris LeCompte Soiseth, who entered eternal rest on June 19, 2026, at Fort Yates IHS Hospital, following a courageous battle with pneumonia. She was 98 years old.
Doris was born on March 9, 1928, in rural Mobridge, South Dakota, to Obede and Cecelia LeCompte. Raised in a loving and close-knit family, she developed the compassion, strength, and kindness that would define her throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Gwen Valandra; her brother, Dean LeCompte; and her beloved children, Linda (Claymore) DuBray, Delano Claymore, Richard Claymore, Kenneth Claymore, Brent Claymore, Sidney Claymore, and her grandchildren Lisa Claymore, Ritchie Claymore and Carl Claymore.
Doris is survived by her devoted husband, Charlie Soiseth, whom she married on November 24, 1979. Together they shared a loving partnership that began in 1974 and continued for more than five decades. She is also survived by her son, Scott Jacobson; her brother, Del LeCompte, son-in-law LeRoy DuBray (significate other Kathy Boehler), daughter-in-law Charlene Claymore (married to Brent), sister Freda LeCompte and her adopted children, Craig and Claudene Eagleshield and daughter Peggy Ward.
Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, Kansas DuBray (Deanna), Jamus Meade & Finnegan Meade (great grandson), Dee Ann DuBray (Warren), JW Yellowfat, BJ Claymore, Bret Claymore, Anja Bears Ghost (Randy), Lori Martin as well as her nieces, Renee Vermillion and Ann Valandra, and nieces and nephews, Obede Valandra and Roger Valandra, Obede LeCompte, Sandy LeCompte, Cody LeCompte, Dawn Middletent, Larita Archambault, Sandra LeCompte and Delores LeCompte along with many other relatives and friends who were blessed to know and love her.
A proud graduate of Fort Yates High School, Class of 1946, Doris pursued her passion for dentistry and earned her dental technician certification in 1960. She dedicated her career to caring for others, serving primarily at the Indian Health Service Hospital in Fort Yates. Her skills and compassion also took her to hospitals in Pine Ridge, Flandreau, Lower Brule, and Cheyenne River. Colleagues, Dr. Lou DeAngelo and Dr. Hazle, admired her exceptional work ethic, gentle spirit, and ability to anticipate the needs of patients before they were spoken.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Doris was a faithful member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Fort Yates. Her faith was a guiding force throughout her life. She deeply appreciated the visits from Brother George, who faithfully brought her communion when she could no longer attend Mass in person.
Doris was known for her generosity, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family and community. She supported the mission and students of St. Bernard’s Mission School and touched countless lives through her caring nature and willingness to help others. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck and the Fort Yates IHS Hospital, especially Cree, Dawn, Leah, and Dylan, Rebecca and Valerie Eagleshield for their compassionate care, kindness, and support during Doris’s final days.
Doris was an outstanding dental technician that not only guided and trained new assistants but also trained the new dentists as new ones, seems to appear every year or so.
She was so good with the patients. She treated all patients professionally and with compassion. She was always concerned about the children and elderly. Calming their fears was a talent that she had. Many times Charlie said people would comment on Doris working on their teeth and remembered her with fondness.
The assistants she had working with over the years thought she was such a great teacher. Not only showing them the basics of their positions, but were impressed with her professionalism, and her ability to comfort them and calming those with a lot of fear.
We are sure Doris would like to recognize some of the assistants she worked with over the years (we don’t know most of them but included those we were aware of): Lavonne Running Bear, Kathy Village Center, Debbie Laundreaux, Norma McLaughlin, Peggy Ward, Gail Valandra and Eunice Grey Bear. Doris leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, faith, and service. Her gentle spirit, warm smile, and steadfast dedication to her family and community will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
We want to sincerely thank everyone and extend our appreciation to our friends and family that have shown us their loving support at this time.
If we have omitted someone or not recognized anyone, we sincerely apologize. May she rest in peace and may her memory be eternal.
