VERMILLION – Running back Grayson Hanson rushed for two touchdowns, caught one score and passed for another Thursday to lead Platte-Geddes over Hamlin 42-12 in the 9AA championship game at the Dakota Dome.
Hanson’s touchdown pass went to Jackson Neuman midway through the first quarter to end the first possession of the game and give Platte-Geddes (12-0) a 6-0 lead. Quarterback Kelby Vanderweff threw the first of his two touchdown passes on the first play of the second quarter, a 31-yard strike to Jackson Olsen. A two-point conversion gave the Black Panthers a 14-0 lead.
Hamlin (11-1) first scored with just over nine minutes left in the first half on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Xander Sheehan to Cameron Thue. But Hanson scored on Platte-Geddes’ next possession on a one-yard run for a 20-6 lead that stood at halftime.
Olsen kicked a 22-yard field goal early in the third quarter to make the Black Panthers’ lead 17 points. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Vanderweff hit Hanson with a 50-yard touchodwn pass to extend P-G’s lead to 29-6. After an interception, Hanson ran in his second score with eight and a half minutes left. Aiden Bultke gave Platte-Geddes its final points on a 31-yard scoring run with 5:33 left. Luke Fraser had a six-yard touchdown run for Hamlin on the last play of the game.
Hanson rushed for 75 yards. Neuman added 64. Vanderweff was 5-of-9 passing for 139 yards and two touchdowns for Platte-Geddes.
Fraser rushed for 67 yards for Hamlin.
This is the first state championship for the combined Platte-Geddes school, although Platte and Geddes have both had football champions in the past. Hamlin has won five state championships, the last coming in 2014.
