The youngest of 12 children in her family, June Maxine (Evenson) Maier was born on June 2, 1932 to Martin and Amelia (Berndt) Evenson in White Butte, SD. It was there she was raised and attended grade school. Later, her parents moved into Lemmon, SD where June attended and graduated from Lemmon High School in 1951.
June was united in marriage to Albert Maier in June 1951 and they settled just northeast of Morristown, SD in Sioux County, North Dakota. Together, they farmed and ranched and raised their three children: Sue, Rich, and Jeff.
A selfless mother and exceptional homemaker with an impeccable work ethic, June’s contributions to the family extended well beyond the walls of their idyllic two-story farmhouse. She was Albert’s right-hand woman and on any given day, you would find her helping make repairs, feeding cows, moving equipment, or whatever else needed to be done. June also worked for social services, providing home care for the elderly.
June was an exemplary friend and neighbor to all. An excellent conversationalist with a quick wit and great sense of humor, she loved visitors – planned or unannounced – each of whom was greeted with a hot cup of coffee and freshly-baked treat. June was a great cook and she took pride that no one ever left hungry from her kitchen table. Even her outdoor pets would sometimes get a hot breakfast on a cold winter’s day.
Musically inclined, June enjoyed playing her accordion and electric organ, listening to performances on the radio and TV, and attending dances. She was great with needlework and, over the years, gave away hundreds of towels, blankets, mittens, scarves, and pot scrubbers. A natural green thumb, she kept many house plants and often raised a bountiful garden.
Of all June’s talents, none was more pronounced than being the most amazing grandmother. She was undeniably proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. June loved and doted upon her grandchildren and they, in return, loved and adored Grandma June.
Her grandchildren will never forget the twinkle in Grandma June’s eyes or her care, patience, kindness, generosity, wit, and, above all else, the way she made them each feel special. They remain grateful for the way she always made time to spend with them – reading, coloring, playing cards or puzzles, baking, collecting eggs, hiding the thimble, or even making mud pies.
Albert passed away in 2009 and June continued to live on the farm. In 2017, after more than 60 years in the same house, June moved to an apartment in Lemmon where she continued to entertain friends, family, and neighbors. As her health continued to decline, June moved into Five Counties Nursing Home in 2018 where she had since resided. June passed away from natural causes on January 14, 2021.
June was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert; five brothers, Stanton, Edward, Clarence, Melvin, and Ray; one half-brother, Charles; four sisters, Ruth Evenson, Rose Henderson, Agnes Becker and Lillian Bridges; one half-sister, Mildred Gibbons; and great-grandson Cole Bertolotto.
Grateful to have shared her life, June is survived by her children Susan Maier of Salina, KS, Richard (Laura) Maier of Mobridge and Jeff (Connie) Maier of Morristown; grandchildren Casey (Jessie) Crouch, Jessica Patton, Connie (Jason) Bertolotto, Travis (Danci) Maier, Dan (Janae) Maier, Rocky (Lexi) Maier, Kent Maier, Jaden (Brandi) Maier, and Kyle (Allie) Maier; and nine great-grandchildren (and counting).
