Joseph (Joe) James Austin, 53, unexpectedly passed away on Friday, February 26, 2021 at his home in Sterling, Virginia.
Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph will be Friday, March 5, 2021 at 10:30am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Mobridge, South Dakota. Burial will follow the funeral at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Services will be livestreamed on the Kesling Funeral Home Facebook Page.
Joe was born in Mobridge, South Dakota on January 28th, 1968. He graduated from Union High School in Roosevelt, Utah. He continued his education at the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Joe was the Associate Chief Information Officer (ACIO) for the United States Department of the Interior, Office of the Assistant Secretary- Indian Affairs, Office of Information Management Technology. He was employed for 32 years with the Department of Interior and dedicated his career to serving Indian Country.
Joe was a devoted father and enjoyed auto mechanics in his spare time. He enjoyed watching the NFL especially the Pittsburgh Steelers, attending music concerts, making people laugh and smile with his witty sense of humor, cheffin’ it up in the kitchen, many DIY projects, and hunting.
Joe is survived by his daughter Brynn Austin of Sterling, VA, son Kyle Austin of Arizona, daughter Kelsey Rojas of Amado, AZ, parents Thomas and Laura Austin of Mobridge, SD, sister Patricia Austin of Billings, MT, brother Justin Austin of Aberdeen, SD, sister Karen Austin of Littleton, CO. Nieces: Shea Austin, Carolyn Fernandez, Taylor Picotte. Nephews: Miles Rather, Jaxon Austin, Tayvin Austin, Evan Austin. Grandchildren Zoey and Logan, and many other family members, and many special friends too many to list throughout his career and travels.
Joe was proceeded in death by brother Richard Austin and sister Caralyn Austin.
