Alabama pro Mark Daniels Jr. went into Championship Monday of the Bassmaster Elite Series on Lake Oahe with a lead of more than 6 pounds over the rest of the field. He was the last of the 12 finalists to weigh in yesterday (Mon.) afternoon in Pierre……
Before the final weighins started, Daniels—who has been leading the tournament for three of the four days– was hoping to hang on for his very first Elite Series win.
Daniels netted $100-thousand for his first place finish.
Former Bassmaster Classic winner Casey Ashley came in 2nd with a total weight of 66 pounds, 5 ounces, bringing 16-9 to the scales yesterday. Ashley earned $26-thousand for his four-day effort. The biggest limit of the day, however, was brought in by Clifford Pirch who brought in 20-pounds, 11-ounces. Pirch finished third, which earned him $20-thousand.
Over the course of the four day tournament, Elites caught 1231 smallmouth bass with a total weight of 2733 pounds, 4 ounces.
Bradley Roy, who finished sixth on Oahe, climbed to the top of the Bassmaster Angler of the Year points race. The Oahe event was the seventh of nine regular-season tournaments and marks the first time in B.A.S.S.’s 50-year history the professional tournament has been held on the 370-thousand acre impoundment.
Elites next go to Harford County, MD, for the Bassmaster Elite at Upper Chesapeake Bay July 26-29.
