The Pierre Fire Department was dispatched to a report of an indoor natural gas line leak at approximately 11:30 am on August 10, 2021. When firefighters arrived at the 300 block of North Buchanan Avenue they immediately started evacuations of the surrounding homes.
As a precautionary measure, all structures surrounding the effected leak were evacuated and all roads in the immediate area were shut down. There were approximately ten homes in the affected area, however not all homes were occupied at the time of the incident.
“Isolating and protecting the area of the incident is fairly standard on these type of incidents” said fire chief Ian Paul. “This helps keep the public and all responders safe until the hazard is mitigated.”
Electricity was temporarily disconnected which may have affected some homes in the immediate area.
A homeowner had noted the smell of gas in his home and contacted Montana Dakota Utilities (MDU). MDU contacted the fire department to assist with the call once they noted a lower level of gas in the home.
Firefighters were on scene for approximately one hour. Assisting the Fire Department was Pierre Police, AMR, MDU, and City Electric.
