FARGO, ND – Top seed South Dakota State, after losing only once in 22 regular season Summit League games, was upset Thursday by fourth-seed Kansas City 4-2 in the Summit League Softball Championship at Tharaldson Park.
Later on Thursday, the Jackrabbits stayed in the tournament with a 1-0 win over North Dakota.
First-team All-Summit League pitcher Grace Ganzler took the loss for SDSU against Kansas City. The Jackrabbits didn’t score until the seventh inning.
Against UND, Summit League Pitcher of the Year Tori Kniesche pitched a four-hit shutout. Emma Osmundson hit a triple in the fifth inning for SDSU (39-6) to drive in the game’s only run.
The Jacks will play Friday at 3:30 against the loser of the day’s first game between Kansas City and Omaha. SDSU will have to win that game, then two more on Saturday to win the Summit League title.
