The South Dakota Discovery Center in Pierre is opening a new exhibit today (Sept. 24, 2021) with a ribbon cutting at 5:30pm CT.
“Soil Is Life” invites children to crawl through the soil tunnel underneath the Discovery Center tree house dressed as one of the many critters that make their homes underground. Kids can also engage in hands-on activities related to soil health and what soil does to support life.
Special projects director Anne Lewis says healthy soil is the foundational building-block to our ecosystems. She says without healthy soil full of life, we don’t have clean air, drinkable water, agriculture, biodiversity and more.
Discovery Center executive director Dr. Rhea Waldman says “Soil Is Life” was made possible through a partnership with the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, South Dakota; the Pierre-Fort Pierre Rotary Club; and support from members of the community and local businesses. She says the Discovery Center is dedicated to empowering all Peoples of the Great Plains through hands-on experiences that inspire scientific thinking.
RSVP to the ribbon cutting on the South Dakota Discovery Center’s website.
