Now that new legislative district boundaries for South Dakota have been approved, the state Democratic Party sees opportunities for them to gain representation in the state legislature, and possibly some of the state’s Constitutional offices.
Party Chair Randy Seiler of Fort Pierre says they’re looking “forward to a competitive election cycle under the newly drawn district boundaries.” He says they appreciate the work of the Senate Republicans in this a bipartisan effort to create “fairer maps than we had the past ten years.”
Seiler says fairer maps are better for our democracy. He says the new map shuffles the board and presents new opportunities for Democrats to win seats across the state and restore balance in Pierre.
Seiler encourages all Democrats in South Dakota to get acquainted with their new district and consider whether they– or someone they know– should run for office. He says party leaders are excited to work with candidates and potential candidates for office.
Democrats had one representative on each of the two Redistricting Committees– Ryan Cwach of Yankton on the House side and Senator Troy Heinert of Mission on the Senate side.
