NOVEMBER 3, 2022, UPDATE:
Yesterday (Nov. 2, 2022) the train bridge in Pierre got two more wins.
Around 10:45am, Ricardo Vazquez-Diaz of Houston, Texas, was traveling north on Pierre Street and attempted to pass under the train viaduct. He was driving a pickup pulling a trailer with a cargo container loaded onto it. The shipping container collided with the bridge and slid partially off the trailer. There was no reported damage to either the cargo box or the train viaduct.
At about 1:45pm, McCuadis Terry from Sioux Falls, attempted to pass under the train viaduct with an over-height cargo truck. The top of the Ryder truck struck the train viaduct. He continued under the train viaduct after the initial collision causing substantial damage to the cargo truck. While investigating the crash, Pierre Police officers learned Terry had an active arrest warrant out from Lincoln County. He was subsequently placed into custody on the warrant and transported to the Hughes County Jail.
Getting hit is nothing new for the bridge underpass along a major route of travel in Pierre. The route takes traffic north or south through the middle of town and is no trouble for regular size vehicles. However, the low clearance– 11 feet, 3 inches– causes trouble for semis, large RVs and other tall vehicles that don’t take the truck route option through town.
