Mobridge residents can expect to pay higher water bills in the new year, as the City Council approved the rate hikes at Wednesday (November 9th) night’s regular meeting. City Finance Officer Heather Beck said prices for natural gas fees and chemicals have increased significantly, along with health insurance and pay raises for staff, which all goes into the production of Mobridge’s water.
The rate will also increase as an availability fee for properties that currently have the water shut off.
Police Department
Mobridge Police Chief Shawn Madison presented a Life Saving Award to Officer Jamison Ries for his role in an incident that occurred in October.
Also for the Police Department, the council approved the purchase of a 2020 Dodge Charger at a cost of $22,600. Chief Madison said this vehicle was in the budget for 2023 but has become available earlier than expected. Finance Officer Beck said since there is $25,000 in the budget for 2023, to go ahead and purchase the car now. She said this will still leave plenty of room in the police department budget for 2022, and no purchases will be made in the new year.
Zoning
Mayor Gene Cox recommended that the council deny a petition to waive the sidewalk requirement on the south side of a property at 11th Avenue East in Mobridge.
A motion to deny the petition was then approved.
Also at Wednesday night’s meeting, the council approved the airport farmlands lease bid of $16,355 from Tanner Ulmer.
The hay bid lease for miscellaneous tracts was awarded to John Haefner for $3,300 per year.
Pay Request number 3 to Northern Plains Contracting in the amount of $19,615.28 for the waste water project was approved.
Council approved the agreement with the State for its portion of the Jet “A” fuel system project in the amount of $123,807.
2023 liquor licenses that were up for renewal were all approved.
Council approved two abatements from the County: a County property on 2nd Ave West will have the City’s front footage taken off; and a property on 4th Street West deeded to the City in October will have all back taxes and assessments removed.
Mayor Cox read part of a letter from the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks recommending the City’s grant application for the pool shade project.
As the meeting ended, Mayor Cox wished everyone a Happy Veterans’ Day and a Happy Thanksgiving.
