VERMILLION – The Quarriers were quite impressive.
Dell Rapids used two touchdown runs from quarterback Jack Henry and a clamping defense to defeat West Central Friday 24-7 in the SDHSAA 11A Football Championship at the DakotaDome.
Dell Rapids (12-0) won its first championship since 2014, limiting West Central (10-2) to -15 yards in the first half and only 97 for the game.
Henry, the Joe Robbie Most Valuable Player, scored on keepers of 21 yards in the first quarter and 15 yards in the second quarter and Dell Rapids led 12-0 at halftime.
Mason Stubbe extended the Quarriers’ lead to 18-0 with a six-yard scoring run with just under seven minutes left.
West Central’s only score came on the Trojans’ next drive with a Justin Zirpel to Aiden Bartmann connection for 11 yards, but Brayden Pankonen sealed the win for Dell Rapids with a two-yard touchdown run with 1:42 left.
Henry passed for 182 yards and ran for 64 for Dell Rapids. Pankonen had seven catches for 125 yards. Stubbe, Chase Jones and Braden Fersdahl had interceptions.
Dalton Mulder had 14 tackles and an interception for West Central, who tried for its state-record 13th championship.
