SIOUX FALLS – Further proving perceived competitiveness among all eight teams in the classification, eighth seed Elk-Point Jefferson topped one-seed Wagner Thursday in the first match of the SDHSAA Class A State Volleyball Tournament at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
Five-time defending Class A champion Sioux Falls Christian swept Dakota Valley, Miller rallied from two sets down to top Platte-Geddes, and Elkton-Lake Benton made the semifinals for the first time.

An aggressive attack led Elk-Point Jefferson (25-9) to the victory over the top seed. Bentlee Kollbaum led the Huskies with 18 kills, followed by Josie Curry with 13, Natalie Heuertz with 12 and Danica Torrez with nine, plus two aces. Elk Point-Jefferson had eight blocks and Sophia Giorgio had 53 set assists.
Emma Yost had 15 kills and a solo block for Wagner (31-4).
Huskies’ head coach Erin Kuper led her team to the win just five days after giving birth to a baby boy.

The Chargers (31-5) won their 18th straight state tournament match, paced by 15 kills, an ace and three block assists by Ellie Lems. Sidney Oostra hit 10 kills and served four aces.
For Dakota Valley (26-8), Sophie Tuttle had eight kills and Jorja Van Den Hul scored seven.

Elkton-Lake Benton (31-3) took advantage of Belle Fourche errors to make a state semifinal for the first time in the program’s second state tournament. Andrea Renkly had 11 kills for the Elks and Rachael Krog had eight.
Mataya Ward had 11 kills for Belle Fourche (32-7).
