WATERTOWN – Sisseton pulled off the surprise of the first round of the SDHSAA Girls Class A Basketball Tournament Thursday at the Watertown Civic Arena.
Sisseton, in the state tournament for the first time in 12 years, knocked off Rapid City Christian after higher seeds Hamlin, Red Cloud and Wagner all won.
Hamlin 42, Flandreau 32
In a game where defenses prevailed, Hamlin (23-0) remained undefeated as Kami Wadsworth scored 18. Addison Neuendorf scored 12 and Marissa Bawdon 10 for the Chargers.
Flandreau (19-5), who surprised defending champion St. Thomas More in the SoDak 16, had eight points from Claire Sheppard, but the Fliers shot only 27 percent.
Red Cloud 76, Lakota Tech 55
Red Cloud (21-2) earned its third win of the season over Lakota Tech. The Crusaders, who led by one at halftime, outscored the Tatanka 26-10 in the third quarter to gain control of the game.
Lolo Carlow scored 23 and Maikole Carlow had 21 for Red Cloud, each hitting five three-pointers.
Shania Fergusson scored 21 and Melina Shangreaux had 16 for Lakota Tech (19-5).
Wagner 67, Rapid City Christian 47
Wagner pulled away late, hitting seven three-pointers in the final 10 minutes and shooting 57% in the second half.
The Red Raiders (22-2) had 22 points and seven rebounds from Ashlyn Koupal. Emma Yost scored 17 and Shalayne Nagel had 14.
Olivia Kieffer led Rapid City Christian (19-5) with 20 points to improve her career total to 2,435, only 52 points short of being in the top 10 in South Dakota girls high school basketball.
