SIOUX FALLS – One of the sharpest games of the season for Pierre Governor Girls Basketball assured the team a chance to play for a state championship.
Reese Terwilliger scored 19 points with eight rebounds Friday as Pierre topped Harrisburg 51-37 in the semifinal round of the SDHSAA Class AA Girls Basketball State Tournament at the Sanford Pentagon.
Ryann Barry hit two three-pointers and scored 10 points for the Governors (20-3). Ayvrie Kaiser scored eight points with five rebounds and six assists. Remington Price and Lennix DuPris each scored seven, with both hitting a three-pointer. Price’s three-pointer gives her 200 for her Governor career.
Harrisburg (17-6), who had beaten defending champion O’Gorman in the first round Thursday, had 17 points and three three-pointers by Abigail Flanagan.
This game was basically decided when Pierre outscored Harrisburg 15-2 in the first quarter. Terwilliger scored in the paint, Barry hit a three-pointer and Terwilliger hit a layup and free throw and Pierre was up 8-0 just over five minutes into the game. After a Harrisburg basket, Barry hit another three, Kaiser made a shot in the lane and DuPris turned a steal into a fast break layup. Harrisburg never came closer than nine points down for the rest of the game.
Pierre shot 50% from the floor while holding Harrisburg to 35% shooting. Pierre also hit all seven free throws and has made 56 of their last 71 at the line.
The Governor girls have a first state championship game since 2008. They will meet Sioux Falls Washington on Saturday night at the Sanford Pentagon.
