The US Department of Agriculture Forest Service is planning to conduct up to 11 prescribed burns between now and the end of May (May 31, 2023) on the Fort Pierre National Grassland in Jones and Lyman County.
Dan Svingen is the District Ranger for the Fort Pierre Ranger District, which manages the Fort Pierre National Grassland. He says ignition will only occur if there are suitable weather and fuel conditions.
The purpose of these prescribed burns is to increase the dominance and diversity of native vegetation. Objectives include improvements to livestock forage and wildlife habitat quality and reductions in fuel loading.
Adjacent landowners, visible homeowners and local fire and law enforcement departments will be contacted prior to ignition. Smoke from the fires may be visible from US Highway 83, Interstate 90 and the communities of Draper, Fort Pierre, Kennebec, Murdo, Pierre, Presho and Vivian.
Burns would be completed following direction in the relevant burn plans.
Anyone with questions may contact the Fort Pierre Ranger District at 605-224-5517.
