Fort Pierre and Pierre have both received the Tree City USA designation from the Arbor Day Foundation.
To be recognized as a Tree City USA, a community must demonstrate sound urban forestry practices that include having an Arbor Board and tree-maintenance ordinances.
Fort Pierre Mayor Gloria Hanson says their Arbor Board and GOLD Program students will plant trees tomorrow (April 28, 2023), which is Arbor Day.
Hanson says Fort Pierre does have some work to do on the trees around town.
Pierre Director of Parks and Recreation Bryan Tipton says this is the 40th time Pierre has received the Tree City USA designation.
Tipton says Pierre is working with the Izaak Walton League to supply the saplings for students.
Nationally, Arbor Day is recognized on the last Friday in April. However, around 20 states celebrate the day during a time of year most conducive to tree planting. For example, Florida celebrates Arbor Day the third Friday in January while North Dakota does it the first Friday in May.
