A 39 year old man from Aberdeen driving a box truck is the latest victim of Pierre’s low-clearance train bridge near the Pierre Street and Sioux Avenue intersection.
Information from the Pierre Police Department says officers were called to the bridge around 11:45am yesterday (Sept. 13, 2023) for a traffic crash. Branden Kroll of Aberdeen was traveling southbound on Pierre Street in a 2019 Ford F750 box truck. The box exceeded the 11-foot, 3-inch height limit for the bridge and ultimately struck the bridge causing damage to the roof of the truck’s box. While backing up from the impact, Kroll then struck a light pole knocking it over.
Kroll was cited for Failure to Obey a Traffic Signal.
Getting hit is nothing new for the bridge underpass along a major route of travel in Pierre. The route takes traffic north or south through the middle of town and is no trouble for regular size vehicles. However, the low clearance (11 feet, 3 inches) causes trouble for semis, large RVs and other tall vehicles that don’t take the truck route instead of the “regular” route through town.
