VERMILLION – A tough defense for the Parkston Trojans didn’t relent, leading to a third quarter comeback and a championship.
Parkston scored two third quarter touchdowns and limited the opponent to two first downs in the second half of a 12-7 win over Howard Thursday in the SDHSAA 9AA Football State Championship at the DakotaDome.
Howard (10-2) broke a scoreless tie with a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Taiden Hoyer with just over two minutes to play in the first half.
Parkston (12-0) came to within a point on a 22-yard keeper by quarterback Luke Bormann with 2:27 left in the third. A missed two-point conversion held the lead for Howard at 7-6.
The Trojans then held the Tigers to a third straight three-&-out before Bormann turned the game around with a 74-yard touchdown run for the game’s final points with 1:13 left in the third quarter.
Howard’s offense continued to struggle in the fourth quarter, including losing a fumble.
Parkston limited Howard to 125 yards of total offense, 83 of which were on their touchdown drive.
Parkston won its first 9-man championship. The Trojans won the 11B title in 2014.
