It’s been about eight years since the Pierre City Commission voted against the idea, but the question of allowing residents to raise chickens was brought up again at last week’s (Nov. 28, 2023) meeting.
Paul Giovanetti brought members of his Boy Scout Troop to the meeting to show them a local government body at work. He says his troop members wanted him to address the commission about a topic, so Giovanetti thought it a good opportunity to bring up the urban chicken topic.
Most city ordinances in place in other towns don’t allow roosters.
Giovanetti says having a half-dozen chickens on a person’s property brings several benefits.
The topic of urban chickens was shot down by the Pierre City Commission in April of 2014 and again in 2015.
Because the topic came up during the public comment portion of the meeting rather than as a scheduled agenda item, the commissioners did not discuss the issue further.
