State Court Administrator Greg Sattizahn emphasized that the program, costing $1.4 million to set up, would save counties $2.1 million, resulting in a net savings of about $600,000. This initiative is part of Governor Kristi Noem’s recommended budget and is deemed a necessary ongoing expense.
Sattizahn highlighted the challenges faced by small or medium-sized counties in South Dakota when dealing with major indigent defense cases. The proposed program aims to address these challenges and streamline indigent defense at the state level, making South Dakota one of six states without such coordination.
There was broad support from various entities, including the Attorney General’s Office and legal associations.
Having received a “do pass” recommendation, the bill now advances to the House Appropriations Committee for further consideration.
