As part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week this week (April 8-12, 2024) in South Dakota, the National Weather Service has been focusing on different themes each day.
Today (April 11, 2024), Hughes and Stanley County Emergency Management Director Troy Blevins says the focus is on tornado safety.
Blevins says being prepared for severe weather is only a first step.
Blevins says the National Weather Service has a wealth of information available regarding severe weather preparedness.
National Weather Service officials say it’s important to prepare now and consider what actions you would take in any situation, whether at school, work, outdoors or traveling. Along with personal safety, NWS officials encourage businesses to evaluate and practice their severe weather plans.
Again, at 10am today, the storm sirens in Hughes and Stanley counties will be tested. Tomorrow’s severe weather preparedness focus will be on extreme heat and wildfire.
Anyone with questions about severe weather preparedness can contact Blevins at 605-773-7454.
This year’s daily severe weather preparedness themes are:
- Monday: Weather Alerts and Warnings
- Tuesday: Severe Storms Wind, Hail & Lightning
- Wednesday: Flash Floods
- Thursday: Tornado Safety
- Friday: Extreme Heat & Wildfire
