APRIL 19, 2024:
The Pierre City Commission has selected a construction manager at risk (CMaR) to lead a major update at the town’s wastewater treatment plant.
The commission awarded the $25,000 CMaR contract to PKG Contracting from Fargo. As the CMaR, PKG will work closely with the previously selected engineering firm, Burns and McDonnell, on design and material selection to replace the final clarifier at the wastewater treatment plant.
City Administrator Kristi Honeywell says they used the CMaR process when Pierre built the water treatment plant. She says PKG actually held that contract as well and they were very pleased with the results.
A final clarifier is large piece of equipment used during the last stage in the wastewater treatment process. The plant’s current final clarifier is 25 years old and reaching the end of its useful life.
PKG and Burns and McDonnell are expected to begin preconstruction services for design by the end of April. Once design is mostly complete, the City will consider extending the CMaR contract to include construction management, establish a construction timeline, and negotiate a guaranteed maximum price.
FEBRUARY 1, 2024:
The Pierre City Commission has taken the next step toward updating the town’s wastewater treatment plant.
City Project Manager Gidget Palmer asked to hire a construction manager at risk– or C-MAR– for the wastewater final clarifier project.
The project will have a six-month construction window.
Palmer says the C-MAR proposals are due to the city by Feb. 28, 2024, at 5pm CT.
This would not be the first time Pierre has used a construction manager at risk. Mayor Steve Harding says it’s worked well for past city projects.
