HURON – Ethan won in a thriller, defending champion Viborg-Hurley cruised and Wolsey-Wessington and Wall gutted out wins in the first round of the SDHSAA Girls Class B Basketball Tournament at the Huron Arena.
Wolsey-Wessington 53, Jones County 42
Ethan 55, Castlewood 53
Leah Klock scored on a putback of a missed free throw with six seconds left for the winning points for the Rustlers (21-2). The score was Klock’s only field goal of the game.
Madeline Bartscher scored 19 to lead Ethan. Marissa Storm and Ava Lingemann each scored 15.
Madeline Horn scored 22 for Castlewood (16-7), who missed a chance for a win at the final horn when Mackenzie Everson missed a three-pointer.
Viborg-Hurley 64, Howard 46
Defending champion Viborg-Hurley used a 25-point second quarter to pull away.
Denae Mach scored 25 for the Rams (21-3). Estelle Lee scored 19. Coral Mason had nine points and 13 rebounds.
Abby Aslesen led Howard (19-5) with 17 points.
