HURON – Defending state champion Viborg-Hurley and Wall earned semifinal wins Friday in the SDHSAA Class B Girls Basketball State Tournament at Huron Arena.
Wall outlasted top seed Wolsey-Wessington to make a championship game for the first time. Viborg-Hurley, after cruising past Ethan, will try to become the first repeat Class B girls champion since Sully Buttes in 2016 and ’17.
Semifinals
Wall 76, Wolsey-Wessington 72
Nora Dinger scored 24 as Wall (20-5) advanced to the program’s first championship game. Paige Kjerstad scored 17 and Rhea Tuckers had 16 for the Eagles.
Mya Boomsma scored 21 for Wolsey-Wessington (22-3). Arizona State commit Mallory Miller scored 20 with 15 rebounds. Leah Williams also poured in 20 for the Warbirds.
Viborg-Hurley 52, Ethan 34
Viborg-Hurley (22-3) used a 15-4 run in the first half to break open a tight game. Denae Mach led the Cougars with 21 points and hit four three-pointers. Charley Nelson had 16 points.
Ava Lingemann scored 13 for Ethan (21-3).
Consolation
Jones County 47, Sully Buttes 38
Castlewood 51, Howard 47
Castlewood (17-8) pulled away from a close game to led by nine in the fourth quarter before hanging on for the win. Madeline Horn had 15 points and MacKenzie Everson scored 13, both with eight rebounds, for the Warriors.
Kate Connor scored 17 points with nine rebounds for Howard (19-6).
