FORT MYERS, FL – For now, numbers are keeping Bailey Ober out of the big leagues.
The Twins sent Ober to Triple-A St. Paul Sunday, wishing that he continue to have regular work. This ends any notion that the Twins may have used a six-man starting rotation to begin the season. Instead, they will go with these five: Pablo López, Sonny Gray, Joe Ryan, Tyler Mahle and Kenta Maeda. López is scheduled to start the Twins’ season opener Thursday at Kansas City.
Pitchers Danny Coulombe and Aaron Sanchez and outfielder Kyle Garlick were also assigned to minor league camp.
Minnesota 7, Boston 2
At JetBlue Park, Gray pitched three scoreless innings with four strikeouts, no runs and no hits in his final start before the regular season.
Ryan Jeffers and Willi Castro, who now seems assured to make the opening day roster, hit three-run homers for the Twins (12-15-3).
