FORT PIERRE – The first champions have been crowned in the 2023 South Dakota High School Finals Rodeo at the Stanley County Fairgrounds. Cutting and Reined Cow Horse concluded on Wednesday.
In boys cutting, Caden Stoddard of Norris, though he didn’t win any of the three runs, was best in the average and won the overall title on the basis of points. Other qualifiers to the National High School Finals Rodeo are Cody Dirkes of Hermosa, Gabe Clines of Smithwick and Braden Routier of Buffalo.
Landry Haugen of Sturgis qualified in girls cutting for the second straight year, winning in points and notching the best average. Other girls cutting NHSFR qualifiers are Sydney Stahl of Kimball, Tava Sexton of Whitewood and Piper Hanson of Burke.
Dallie Lawrence of Alzada, Montana repeated as the Reined Cow Horse champion. Haugen finished second, with Chase Brunsch of Pine Ridge third and Pierre’s Ryen Sheppick fourth. These are the same four who qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in 2022 in this event.
