SIOUX FALLS – Despite the recent loss of two of their top players, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits are the choice to win the 2023-24 Summit League Women’s Basketball Championship.
SDSU received 27 of the 36 first-place votes in the poll of head coaches, sports information directors and select members of the media. The Jackrabbits went 18-0 in Summit League play last season, won the postseason conference tournament, and won their first round NCAA Tournament game over USC before losing in the second round to Virginia Tech.
Junior guard Paige Meyer is part of the preseason All-Summit League First Team. Meyer averaged 9.6 points a game last season while shooting over 54 percent from the floor.
Forward Tori Nelson made the second team. Nelson, last season’s Summit League Freshman of the Year, averaged just under eight points a game.
The Jackrabbits must play this upcoming season without Sixth Player of the Year Kallie Theisen and Haleigh Timmer, who were both injured during the offseason.
South Dakota was chosen third in the poll. The Coyotes’ have junior guard Grace Larkins on the preseason first team. Larkins averaged over 18 points and nearly nine rebounds and nine assists last season, along with two steals.
Carley Duffney, a sophomore guard, represents USD on the second team. Duffney averaged just over 12 points a game last season and had the second best free throw percentage (88.5%) in the Summit League.
